Cheyenne’s parents have separated and the baby visits her father every second weekend. But this time everything happens differently: Cheyenne’s mom receives a terrible call - and that after just an hour.
Cheyenne is just 8 months old. Her father grabs her and shakes her all because the little girl will not stop crying. The adult’s strength is too much for the baby and her skull breaks, leading to internal bleeding in her brain.
The horrible news from the hospital is: her daughter will require long-term care for the rest of her life, remaining in a vegetative state: “Between crying so hard I was shaking and throwing up, I was begging God to please save her or to take me instead.
Right when I got by her bedside — seeing her covered in bandages, IVs everywhere, her leg was black from a blood clot, she was so swollen — my phone rings and it’s the cops saying James confessed to shaking her.”
Cheyenne’s father confesses to what he did. He simply “lost control” and is sentenced to 20 years in prison. But while he sits in prison, the mother continues to fight for Cheyenne’s life. The doctors say that she will not survive the night. And that if she does, she will spend the rest of her life in a vegetative state.
But then a miracle happens: even though half of Cheyenne’s brain has to be removed, the little girl actually wakes up! She can speak and move, but the right side of her body is paralyzed. Nevertheless, she doesn’t lose her joie de vivre and doesn’t give up despite her disability.
